about cciv

If one is attracted to understanding or interacting with Chinese traditional culture in an intellectual way, Chinese Civilisation Centre of City University of Hong Kong provides an inspiring setting.

Taking advantage of the tinternational characteristics of Hong Kong, the Centre was launched in 1998 with the ideal of bringing the treasures and values of Chinese civilisation to the knowledge of our students, and in a broader sense, for international appreciation.

An academic establishment in essence, the Centre is endowed by the university with the primary mission of providing excellent education on Chinese tradition at undergraduate level. Each year, 6,000 students experience the pleasure of learning Chinese culture in an assortment of programmes built on the Centre's rich resources in human and material kind.

Twenty faculty members form the academic team. All of them are emerging scholars in various fields of traditional Chinese studies, from poetic tradition of pre-Qin era, through history spanning dynastic periods, to art and musical taste of scholar-literati. Their courses are developed and teaching materials selected on the basis of respective expertise.

It would not be enough to embrace Chinese civilisation merely through limited classroom contacts. The Centre has pioneered an Integrated System of Conventional and Web-based www.cciv.cityu.edu.hk. This reservoir of scholarship and learning tools enables visitors to set out on an imaginary study tour of art, literature, history and philosophy of Chinese tradition, at anytime anywhere.

External efforts are drawn. Year round, international scholars and artists are invited to deliver academic and cultural activities. In the meantime, journals and books are regularly published to benefit the wider community not exculsive to CityU students.

Developed for nearly a decade, the Centre is proud to have won acclaim in its teaching and promotion of Chinese traditional culture. It will persist with its commitment and enourage the appreciation of Chinese civilisation as a significant part of world civilisations.

City University of Hong Kong is wholly committed to supporting the Chinese Civilisation Centre as it works to instil in its students an international outlook and a thorough understanding of Chinese culture.
