Last night’s the Kunqu performance, At the Lenke Mountain, was an unforgetable experience. It reminded me of the notion of “carthasis” that has long characterised tragedy – a genre that has epitomised the most famous Greek plays of the ancient times such as Antigone or Oedipus the King. While in the ancient times such a process was often about emphathising with a fallen hero, in modern times the protagonist is no longer confined to such a narrow category but can be any common folk (such as the lead role in Author Miller’s Death of a Salesman), whose attributes or experiences are so unfortunate that renders them fall into the category of tragedy.
