exhibition ceremony

Prof Cheng and Dr Yeung

Last Wednesday 13 January 2010 was the opening ceremony of the new exhibition Images of a Great Nation. Hon. So Kam Leung, Ms Zhou Shanshan, Prof C. F. Li, Dr Wong King Keung, Dr Joe Leung, Ms Eve Long, Dr Joseph Yeung, Prof Cheng Pei-kai and others were among those to cut the ceremonial ribbons.

On display are photos by Joseph C. K. Yeung and members of the Greater China Photographic Society. Though their artwork is all on the same theme of ‘hometown’, the photos show each photographer’s distinct personal style. Photographer Joseph C. K. Yeung, who has had solo exhibitions of photographs in Hong Kong, China and the US, took many of these landscapes and peasant sceneries recently in Mainland China. Personally I found the image of the girls crossing the river [Xiangnu guojiang] by Dr Yeung one of the most impressive, but of course the whole collection is worth a visit.

The exhibition runs from 14 January till 28 February 2010.
For further details on the exhibition are available at CCIV website

archway

Last week I visited The Hague and went into ‘Chinatown’. Friends of mine had told me that after many years of waiting, The Hague’s Chinatown finally got its two ‘pailous’ [牌樓] or archways which should bring protection and happiness to the citizens of The Hague. The two archways (see one here) will officially be unveiled on 28 January 2010. Although The Hague is said to have supported the establishment of more Chinese shops and restaurants, its Chinatown still gives the impression of a loosely knit community interspersed with Dutch businesses. I wonder if the presence of the archways will be able to promote its status of ‘Chinatown’.
